Coronavirus (COVID-19)

With the recent outbreak of coronavirus in NZ, it is important that employers are monitoring information about the virus and considering their employment law obligations. We recommend that employers continually consult and engage with their employees should they be affected by coronavirus in some manner.

This may include having discussions with employees about working from home, using sick leave, annual leave or special leave if they need to self isolate or care for a dependent who is sick or required to stay at home.

The Ministry of Health website has published information, advice and the latest updates on coronavirus. Check out Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) website Employment New Zealand for the latest information relating to coronavirus and the workplace. This includes information regarding employer responsibilities around sick leave entitlements. There is also a useful Q&A document which includes advice on more employment situations that could arise around coronavirus.

Please also contact us if you need any further advice or support in managing your obligations around this situation.
