Jo has extensive experience across all aspects of employment law. Her seventeen year career has included private practice in boutique employment law firms, in-house in a national employment law team in the UK, and managing a team of lawyers at the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA). In 2014 she established her own practice and in 2016 the partnership of Douglas Erickson was formed.

As an employment lawyer Jo commonly appears in the MBIE mediation service, the Employment Relations Authority and the Employment Court, representing and advocating for her clients.

Known for her timely, pragmatic and strategic advice, Jo is primarily an advisor to employers. Jo advises businesses and other organisations on compliance and best practice in employment law, procedural fairness and dispute resolution. When providing options and advice to her clients, she understands the commercial realities facing business. She is empathetic to the needs of all involved in a dispute .
Jo also provides strategic and pragmatic advice for employees facing change.

Whether assisting corporate managers, business owners or employees, Jo is passionate about helping people achieve their preferred outcomes in their day-to-day working lives.

Prior to forming Douglas Erickson with Jo in 2016, Daniel was a Partner in another specialist employment law firm for over five years. He has a reputation for providing pragmatic, timely and easy to understand advice. Clients appreciate Daniel’s collaborative and concise approach to solving their employment law problems.

Amongst Daniel’s clients are employers of all sizes in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, freight and logistics and retail. He has also assisted a number of senior executives and CEOs in negotiating the start or the ending of their employment.

If disputes cannot be resolved by negotiation or mediation, Daniel is a skilled litigator. He regularly appears on behalf of his clients in the Employment Relations Authority and the Employment Court. He also has expertise in health and safety, assisting clients in relation to complying with their legislative obligations. He also works with clients following health and safety incidents, during WorkSafe New Zealand investigations and has appeared in the District Court in relation to health and safety prosecutions.

Daniel is regularly instructed by employers to undertake external workplace investigations. His recent work includes investigating allegations of bullying, harassment and breaches of the duty of fidelity.

Helen has been practising law for almost fifteen years.  Prior to joining Douglas Erickson, Helen worked for a public and employment law firm in New Zealand. She has previously worked as a government lawyer in the UK, and in private practice at the Bar in London.

Helen has extensive court and litigation experience.  Over the course of her career, Helen has advised and assisted individual clients regarding their regulatory compliance with various government departments in New Zealand, including the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Helen advised and represented government ministers and departments in the UK, including: the Ministry of Justice; Her Majesty’s Prison Service; and the Parole Board. She has also advised clients in respect of health and safety compliance.

Suzie has specialised in employment law in 2018 and joined Douglas Erickson in November 2019. Before that, Suzie had more than 15 years working for professional services organisations in New Zealand and overseas, including in corporate tax and generalist law roles assisting companies and individuals with strategic advice and compliance issues.

Suzie has a broad range of employment law experience including assisting with personal grievance claims and disciplinary and performance management issues. She has also represented clients at mediation with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and assisted with settlement negotiations.

Suzie’s focus is to provide strategic and pragmatic advice for clients.
