Jo has extensive experience across all aspects of employment law.  Her career has included working as an employment advisor to government, private practice in boutique law firms, in house in a national employment law team in the UK, and managing a team of lawyers in an employers association.   In 2014 she established her own practice and in 2016 the partnership of Douglas Erickson was formed.

As an employer lawyer, Jo commonly appears in the MBIE mediation service, the Employment Relations Authority and the Employment Court, representing and advocating for her clients.

Known for her timely, pragmatic and strategic advice, Jo advises clients on best practice employment law covering all facets of the employment relationship, including privacy, human rights, triangular employment relationships, managing disciplinary processes, poor performance, restructuring, defending personal grievances, advice on bullying and investigations, discrimination law, employment standards, pay equity issues, and contractor versus employee status issues.

She supports alternative HR strategies for bringing about long-term change, in employee engagement and positive workplace culture.

Whether assisting corporate managers, business owners or employees, Jo is passionate about helping people achieve their employment objectives.

Jo is a member and the Secretary of the Auckland Branch of HRNZ.

Daniel Erickson

Prior to forming Douglas Erickson with Jo in 2016, Daniel was a Partner in another specialist employment law firm for over five years. He has a reputation for providing pragmatic, timely and easy to understand advice. Clients appreciate Daniel’s collaborative and concise approach to solving their employment law problems.

Amongst Daniel’s clients are employers of all sizes in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, freight and logistics and retail. He has also assisted a number of senior executives and CEOs in negotiating the start or the ending of their employment.

If disputes cannot be resolved by negotiation or mediation, Daniel is a skilled litigator. He regularly appears on behalf of his clients in the Employment Relations Authority and the Employment Court. He also has expertise in health and safety, assisting clients in relation to complying with their legislative obligations. He also works with clients following health and safety incidents, during WorkSafe New Zealand investigations and has appeared in the District Court in relation to health and safety prosecutions.

Daniel is regularly instructed by employers to undertake external workplace investigations. His recent work includes investigating allegations of bullying, harassment and breaches of the duty of fidelity.

Suzie has specialised in employment law since 2018 and joined Douglas Erickson in November 2019. Before that, Suzie had more than 15 years working for professional services organisations in New Zealand and overseas, including in corporate tax and generalist law roles assisting companies and individuals with strategic advice and compliance issues.

Suzie has a broad range of employment law experience including assisting with personal grievance claims and disciplinary and performance management issues. She has also represented clients at mediation with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and assisted with settlement negotiations.

Suzie’s focus is to provide strategic and pragmatic advice for clients.

Tanzam Hossain

Tanzam began working in employment law in 2015 and has a wide range of experience in advisory and litigation work. She regularly represents clients at MBIE mediations, and has appeared before the Employment Relations Authority and the Employment Court. Tanzam is known for managing client relationships with empathy and pragmatism.

Tanzam also has experience in the health and safety space, having assisted with WorkSafe investigations and health and safety prosecutions.

Tanzam’s clients appreciate her practical and solutions-focused approach to employment law. She is passionate about working with clients to provide them with the best possible outcomes.
